Regular Season Tiebreaker - Head-to-head Divisions

Regular Season Tiebreaker - Head-to-head Divisions

I realize there are still some games left but I had a scenario arise and some teams complain.  Here's the situation:

Team A: 7-2, 4-1 division record

Team B: 7-2, 2-2 division record

Team B beat Team A earlier in the year AND has more points.  They are wondering why they are ranked lower.  My assumption is because of Division Records.  The problem I see happening, though, is that Team B will have one more game than Team B at the end of the year.  Wouldnt that give Team A an unfair advantage over every other team in the division, further complicating tiebreakers?

Please help with this.

The tiebreaker for division leader is record, division record, total points.

Haha results are not used during the regular season as a tiebreaker stat.

It may give them an advantage, it may not. That's why it's important if you're going to do divisions to make sure they play a balanced schedule...

This is a next question, why doesnt Yahoo set up schedules to have even division schedules. This seems silly that someone setting them up manually.

In private leagues, the schedule is the commishs responsibility.

You can use Edit Schedule to change any future week, as of now, that would be week 11 and on to the playoffs.

Everything in the game is not Yahoo!'s responsibility.  Commishs have a job to.

One other note for commissioners setting up leagues with divisions next season:  Yahoo's default schedule when you set up divisions will often not even ensure that every team plays every other team.  Go into commissioner tools | edit schedules.  There will be a schedule matrix at the bottom of the page.  Depending on your league's priorities, you may want to manually adjust your schedule to make sure every team plays every other team and that if you have teams playing other teams twice, those "multiple" games either all happen within the division, or that the balance between division and non-division games are equal.

Re: Regular Season Tiebreaker - Head-to-head Divisions

OK, we have a little different tie-breaker situation in my league that has me confused.  This is for division championship and it's a 3-way tie:

Team A: 7-5; 2nd in points; 5-4 in division

Team B: 7-5; 3rd in points; 5-4 in division

Team C: 7-5; 1st in points; 4-5 in division

I am not sure if the division record tie-breaker gets thrown out due to a 3 way tie.  If it does, then Team C wins.  If it doesn't, then Team C is out and Team A wins.  So it's either Team A or Team C.  Anyone know?

Division record is only used to determine the division leader, after that, the division record is not used.

Team A is in the lead because tie record, tie division record, but more points.

Team C will be next, tie record and more points.

Team B will be last, tie record and fewer points.

Re: Regular Season Tiebreaker - Head-to-head Divisions

Here is what is annoying about Yahoo FF...it is not like the NFL when determining divisional champs.

In the NFL, if teams have same record, next step is head to head, then divisional record.

In Yahoo, it is record, then divisional record, the points scored as the tiebreaker to determine division winner.  Head to Head doesn't even factor in.

So you cannot emulate what happens in the NFL in Yahoo leagues.  I am sure one of the obstacles is due to inconsistent sizes of Yahoo leagues and scheduling, you could end up with a scenario where you play some teams in your division twice, but maybe other teams only once (happens in 12 team leagues; you have 2 six team divisions, and a 13 week regular schedule.  You play everyone in the other division once, leaving 7 games to spread out among the 5 teams in your division. At the end, everyone ends up with the same count of divisional games, but 2 head to head matchups are not guaranteed unlike the NFL).  Then there is the issue that Yahoo has to deal with how to set weekly priority for waivers.  It would be impossible to do this factoring in head to head since there are probably a lot of teams who have not played each other yet.  So it sets the divisional rankings based on wins, then points during the regular season.

The issue can come in when you have a team that is killing eveyone on points (so always the top of the division, and last for waivers) but you get to the end of the season and their record is tied with another team who holds the head to head tiebreaker.  Then suddenly (if you are trying to be like the NFL, and favor H2H results) the commissioner has to get in their and manually change the seedings, and now suddenly the #1 team (based upon wins and points) is now suddenly relagated to second place (because he lost the head to head matchup with #2 team who has the same record).

So unlike the NFL, which really doesn't "seed" teams during the regular season and can wait until it is over and apply seeding logic that incorporates H2H to determine seeds, Yahoo has to have a methodology that has to determine seeds every week due to waiver stuff.

The only way around this is for a Yahoo league to just abandon the idea of any sort of priority seeding for waiver claims..make it a free for all.  That way the weekly seeding methodology is irrelevant and owners just know that at the end of the year, the seeding will be just like the NFL regardless of what Yahoo is telling them the seedings are during the year.
